Alliance Article Study #1: Polyvagal Controversies

July 26 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

What is actually being questioned, and what does that mean for us as facilitators?

In this first Article Study, we will read and discuss excerpts from the Grossman article that lays out the scientific challenges that have recently been raised about Polyvagal Theory. These critiques come from researchers in neurophysiology and related fields who have questioned several of the theory’s foundational claims. We recognize that the reading is technical in places and as facilitators we may not need to have in-depth knowledge and understanding of all the science; we aim to develop enough familiarity with the ongoing discussions to honestly and thoughtfully engage and continue to use the model with integrity. Together in the session, we will read through selected excerpts from the articles and then move into discussion. We hope to spark curiosity and cultivate open discussion of what the current debates entail, what questions arise for us, and how the discussions are most relevant to our work as Toolkit facilitators.  This session is part of our Q3 2026 Alliance theme, Polyvagal Controversies, where we are exploring what the current scientific debate around Polyvagal Theory means for how we use and teach the model with honesty and care.

Host: Gia Hasan

Come ready to engage – curiosity and lived experience welcome, scientific expertise not required.

Please note this event is only for graduates of The Resilience Toolkit Facilitator Certification Program. Access to the workshop is through the private Toolkit Training Alliance space in Mighty Networks.
